We have put your new shared reading book ‘Hunt the Specs’ in your book bags today. Please take a little look over the weekend to familiarise yourself with the text ready for our first shared read on Monday.

Doodle Maths
Please try and spend 10 minutes, 3 times a week answering questions on Doodle Maths to ensure that you are in the Green Zone!

Handwriting
We have been working so hard on our letter formation in our handwriting sessions and the children's letters are continuing to improve. We have been focusing on making sure that we can distinguish between our tall and small letters, and are practising sitting our letters on the line. Any opportunities to practise those alphabet letters at home would be fantastic, we appreciate any time you can put in.

This Week
In English this week we have been preparing for our 500 word stories! The children explored character – what they might look like, be like and what special objects they may have to help them in their adventures. We had a variety of animal characters, with rocket boots, magic backpacks and transporting sunglasses! We then explored what a setting is. We looked at a range of settings, from the ocean to outer space and the children decided where their character would go on their adventure. Your child should come home with some fantastic characters and ideas for their adventure – we hope that some of you decide to write and submit your entries!

In Maths, we have been looking at one more and one less than a number. The children used a range of resources to show one more and one less, we know that ‘more’ means the number will get bigger and ‘less’ means that the number will get smaller. We used our Numberblocks friends to show one more and one less than a range of numbers within 10.

In Science, the children explored their sense of touch. We played a game of ‘what’s in the bag?’. We closed our eyes and had to use our hands to feel a range of objects, describing what they felt like. The rest of us used those words to try and work out what the object in the bag was – the children had some great guesses and used some brilliant scientific vocabulary to describe.

In DT this week we began thinking about how structures are formed. We looked at how structures are made up of more than part, and these parts are joined together. The children were set the challenge of joining two pieces of paper – the children had some great ideas and some even made a 3D structure! We then learned what a ‘tab’ is, how they are made and how we can reinforce these tabs to make our structures even stronger. We will be using what we’ve learned about joining, tabs and reinforcing to design and make our own prototypes of classroom tables! Thank you to those who have already brought in cardboard – another plea!! If you have any cardboard lying around (cereal boxes would be ideal as they are thinner and therefore easier to cut), we would be very grateful as we will be designing and making our tables in the last week of term.

This Week
In English this week we ordered the events from our CLPE book, ‘Beegu’, before writing sentences in the past tense to describe what happened during her time on Earth.

In Maths, the children have been comparing numbers using ‘greater than, less than and equal to’. We used lots of stem sentences to support our learning and used Rekenreks to further show our understanding of numbers.

In Science, the children played a listening game using their hearing senses. They listened to a range of animal noises and had to guess the animal making the noise!

In Humanities, we explored what Victorian school looked like in the past, how children used different equipment to do their learning with and learned that teachers were very strict!

In Art we went on a shape hunt, looking for the different shapes that we could find within our school building. The children drew all of the shapes they could see and could remember lots of their 2D shape names.

We will be visiting St Mary’s Church on Monday 5th October between 9:00am and 10:30am for our annual Harvest Festival Service. If you are available to help us walk the children down to the church and back, please contact us directly so that we can include you in our numbers – thanks so much in advance!

This Week
In English this week we have begun to explore what a poem is. The children used a range of adjectives, thoughts and feelings to create their own poem about the character, Beegu, from our CLPE class text.

In Maths, the children have continued to explore ‘5 and a bit’ using Rekenreks, tens frames and Hungarian dice frames. We have moved onto look at the numbers 6, 7, 8 and 9, using calculations to show what 5 needs to make these numbers, using an addition number sentence to explain our understanding.

In Science, the children began to explore their senses, and the body part associated with each sense. We went on a sense hunt around school, using our eyes, ears, noses and hands to explore our surroundings. We saw flowers, heard bird song, smelt some yummy baking and felt the soft grass between our fingers as we explored.

In RE we looked again at the Parable of the Lost Son, and talked about what the story teaches us about God. We learned that God loves everyone and that we can all forgive others for their mistakes.

In Humanities, we explored what Geography is as a subject and learned that it is the study of the world around us, including places, people and communication between these. The children began looking at features of our world, including human and physical features. We now know that places such as schools, shops and Churches are human features, as they have been created by humans, but things such as hills, rivers and mountains are physical features as they have been formed without human help.

In DT we practised our cutting skills by designing our own pizzas, outfits for teddy bears and even created our own jelly fish!

Today, we have sent home this half terms newsletter, PSHE Knowledge Organiser and Parent Access Code via Arbor, for your perusal.

We have put your new shared reading book 'Lets Sort it Out' in your book bags today. Please take a little look over the weekend to familiarise yourself with the text ready for our first shared read on Monday.

Starling Class loved visiting the school library today and have come home with a picture book of their choice. Please feel free to read this with them over the next week, and we will return them each Friday, replacing them with a new one!

Doodle Maths
Thank you to those who have completed the Doodle Baseline. We have been working through the children as best we can and will continue to do so next week to ensure that they are all up and Doodling by the end of the week!

This Week
We have had a jam-packed week full of learning, and we are so proud of how the children are adapting to the new and more formal learning routines!

In English, we have created an Alien friend for the character in our story and worked towards a final piece of writing where we used adjectives to describe their features.
In Maths, we have been diving deeper into the numbers 6, 7, 8, and 9, looking at them as '5 and a bit'. The children have used a range of resources and manipulatives to show these numbers as different parts.
In Science, we have recapped the features of the human body and the children can recall and identify lots of different body parts confidently!
In PE we have focused on the basics of football and rugby. We have learnt how to dribble the football confidently and how to make an accurate pass; as well as how to move with a rugby ball and are beginning to learn how it is passed from player to player.
