I launched a plane in Autumn.

This week we have been working hard on our skills builder project. Mozart class had some fantastic creative ideas of Mario Kart Town, Lego Village, Atlantis and Beehive world, whilst Franklin decided to make a more sustainable city based around our SDG Goal. The children showed exceptional creativity skills, staying positive when things got hard, aiming high to create a fantastic villages, cities and towns. Overall, both classes excelled in teamwork and their communication skills.

We have been working hard on our numbers up to 50. The children will be continuing this work after Easter half term and then moving onto multiplication and division (sharing).

We have a challenge for your children over the Easter Break. We are finding that the children are struggling with their common exception words, therefore we are sending home your children with a pack of the common exception words and they will be tested on a random selection after Easter. It is important that the children can read and write these words.

We wanted to say a HUGE thank you to all of our volunteers this term, for reading and coming in to help with any trips and walks – without your help the children would be unable to do this and we would like to pass on our appreciation.

This week we have had a fantastic week. In English we have come to the end of our first part of Claude and the City. The children really enjoyed making wanted posters for the robber.

In Maths this week we have covered capacity and volume. The children enjoyed watching to see which container could hold the most water.

In French this week we met superhero Jaunie, she taught the children about what she wears and most importantly she is the colour Yellow.

In RE we have been looking at the Easter story, the children have really engaged with their learning.

In PSHE we have learnt about what to do in an emergency. We had a long discussion about who to call and what to say. The children also impressed us by saying they know they need to stay on the phone to make sure they are out of danger. We also had a long discussion about careers within the emergency services - it was lovely to see so many children who would love a career helping others.

This week in maths we have been learning about Mass. The children talked about heavier and lighter and used scales to measure the mass of different objects.

In English, we have continued with our power of reading book which children love. 

In French, children have continued to look at superheroes. This week they have learnt about the colour blue.

Please continue to read with your child at least 3 times a week and complete numbots. 

Spellings will resume as normal next week.

This week in RE the children began to look at the Easter story and re-created Palm Sunday, even making their own palm leaves! 

In Science the children worked in teams to looking at the foods which animals eat, grouping them into Herbivores, Omnivores and Carnivores. 

In French we have begun a new topic, looking at superheros. Focusing on colours.

This week we have started our new power of reading book. This week's focus was on cities. The children have written some lovely poetry thinking about the organisation of their poem and the number of lines in a verse.

Parents evening slots have been sent out - please make sure you book these!

The children have loved their PE lessons where they have been doing jumps and sequences of movement during gymnastics and football passing and accuracy today.

In science this week we have been looking at what makes a mammal a mammal and the different types of mammals there are. Children really enjoyed learning that there are mammals that live in the water as well as on land. This links fantastically to our visit from Safari Stu at the start of February.

Within English this week we have enjoyed exploring the end of Anna and Crocodiles adventure in our book 'How to Find Gold'. The children wrote some fantastic sentences and poems in their English about storms today.

In maths we have finished our place value topic to 20 and moving onto addition within 20 next week.

This week in maths the children have been looking at numbers 10 - 20. They have made these numbers using ten frames and Dienes. They all did a fantastic job and can explain how many tens or ones are in each number. 

In English we have looked at a picture of a girl and a crocodile pulling a boat. We thought about what they could be doing or where they could be going. We also thought about going on an adventure and what we would take with us in our back-packs. 

In Science,  we organised animals into groups and talked about how scientists group animals - mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects etc

During PSCHE we thought about what keeps us healthy. We spoke about what we needed to do to stay healthy and why it was important.

In Phonics we have been looking at the sound a_e (ay) -  Cake, bake, snake etc. See if you can spot any a_e sounds when reading. 

Get your children onto numbots online to practice their addition and subtraction. It is a great fun way for your child to do their maths.

TALK HOMEWORK: Look around your home, what 3D shapes can you spot over the Christmas break. Maybe you could bring some examples into school for after the Christmas holidays.

This week your children have really enjoyed being the school elves. They have undertaken a Skills Builder project called 'Special Delivery' where they have delivered Christmas cards to the whole school. They were put into teams, they had many team building activities like designing a logo, stamp, creating a delivery company name and designing their outfits. The children thrived and used lots of their skills builder skills which was fantastic to see.

In Maths this week we have started to look at 3D shapes and the children are enjoying learning about them.

In English this week we have finished the Jolly Postman's journey. The children created a wanted poster as the Big Bad Wolf was dressed as a Grandma. The children used great description to describe the Big Bad Wolf and they really enjoyed this lesson.

The children have worked so hard during Autumn Term and need a well deserved break. Thank you to all volunteers who have supported Year 1 this term, we really appreciate it.

This week the children have continued to look at poetry. As a class, they have written poems about fire, thinking about their senses and which adjectives to use to best describe what they can see, hear, feel and smell.

In maths we have been using a number line to add and subtract numbers, making sure that we are travelling along the number line in the correct direction.

Art was a huge hit this week as we have been monoprinting. The children used tin foil, paint and cotton buds to print pictures of animals. It was a big success!

In PSCHE the children have been talking about what is kind and unkind behaviour. Thinking about how we can display the kind behaviour in school, making sure that we are good friends to one another.

This week the children have started their new topic of Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure. Through this topic we have started to look at maps of Buckden. We have studied both google maps and OS maps, looking at what the maps show us and some of the differences between them.

In PE the children have started Dance. Over the next half term the children will look at different modes of transport, this week they have been dancing to music, interpreting what it is like to drive a car. We have also started our new outdoor sport of Rugby. 

In English we have started to look at poetry, especially poems about different seasons. 

In maths the children have been adding 2 numbers together, writing their number sentences out and drawing dots or using cubes to help them add the numbers together. All the children have been superstars at this.

During Science we went on a material hunt around the school. Children have started to identify different materials and the properties of those materials. 

We have started a new topic in French, This half term they will be looking at jungle animals. The children know how to say elephant and lion in french.

Talk homework - This week see if you can go on a materials hunt around your house. What materials can they name? Think about why certain items are made from particular materials?

There are no spellings this week due to half-term, but please continue to listen to your child read at least 3 times over the week.

This week in school the children have continued their learning about senses. We have looked at different animals and the different senses they use and why. Continuing with our sense's work, the children have started to explore Autumn. They went on an autumn walk, using their senses to observe things around them and using the leaves they collected, they have also created the most beautiful leafmen.

In English we have been exploring a  story map and have looked at descriptive words and phrases to describe the dark dark wood.

During maths we have been finding numbers bonds to 10. We have also been reading numbers in words, thinking about which ones we can sound out and which are the tricky words!

We have had lots of reports that the children have been sharing their fantastic french with you at home. Because of this we have attached the link to the song lyrics so that you can all sing along together!

Please continue to read with your child every day, recording their reading on Boomreader. 

This week in maths the children have been learning about part-part whole. They have done a brilliant job with this and have even learnt about the number sentence and fact family that goes along with it. 

In English we have continued with our power of reading book - Beegu- and the children have had a go at role play. We have some fantastic actors and actresses within year 1 who really captured the feelings and emotions of the characters in the story.

In Art, the children have had a go at using oil pastels to do an observational drawing of an orange. They paid attention to the gradual blending of colours and the details which they could see. 

In Science we have continued to learn about our 5 senses. Next week we will be exploring taste. We would like the children to taste a few different foods, encouraging them to use vocabulary to describe what they taste like - banana, honey, pepper, lemon, carrot, salted crisps. We understand that some children may not like the taste but will still encourage them to give it a go so they can taste the difference between sweet, salty and sour. If there are any children who are allergic to these foods please can you let us know.
