Thank you to all the children for coming back to school with such positive attitudes and enthusiasm.  

We have been practising our place value knowledge in Maths and recapping coordinating conjunctions in English.  

We have spoken about the importance of practising our times tables and reading during the week.

In readiness for the Year 4 performance, we will be holding auditions next week.  The children have been provided with a poem that they can read / recite during the auditions.  

A gentle reminder, from Monday 9th onwards, that all playtime snacks need to be either fruit or vegetables.  Children can bring in other items in their lunch-boxes to be eaten at lunch time.

In Maths, we investigated the use of graphs and how the information given is similar to a story.  We learnt how to plot the x and y-axis and how to decide the value of each interval.

We have completed our DT project and sewed our patterns onto the wallets / purses.  We used a button as a fastening to keep the items inside safe.

This week in year 4, we have been scientifically busy! Monday through to Thursday the whole year group took part in three full science days! From creating an experiment to see how the material of a craft mouse could impact its distance of flight, to creating a human classification key to help people identify the 8 most common bumble bees found in England. Ivy, Hugo and Isla (P) impressed the head of Science when they worked together to role play in a video to test out our classification key that was made up by the rest of year four! 

TT Rockstars- there is a tournament between the Year 4 classes and another tournament between Year 4/5.

We have completed the Year 4 multiplication tests.  When the results are released we will pass them onto yourselves.

In English and History, we have been learning about the Windrush era and imagining how it must have felt being on the HMT EMpire Windrush ship.

In Maths, we are starting to learn angles.  Ask us about acute, right, straight and obtuse angles.

TT Rockstars - National Test happening next week, please practise your times table.

In English, we have created a village that replicates the one in our new CLPE Reading book. 

During Maths, we are applying our knowledge of the tenths and hundredths to resolving problems with money.

This afternoon, we recapped our sewing skills by using the running and over stitches.

TT Rockstars - Please be reminded that the National Multiplication test will be happening in June and children would benefit from regular practice of their times tables.

We had fun today performing out pentatonic scale through the 'Cowboy song'.

In DT, we made delicious kibbeh (Syrian meatballs).  The children learnt some health and safety skills and were very capable at chopping and slicing.

We finished our class- reader, The Wolf's Footprint in class.  Please ask the children about their view on the ending.

In Art, we have been making some fantastic clay pots.

Our English lesson consisted us writing our newspaper report which required an introduction, the full article and a conclusion about what might happen next.

In Science, we tried to make a light blub light up without any instructions.  We also about electric inventors in our reading comprehension.

We wrote a recipe on how to make kibbeh in DT and we are hoping to make it next week - YUM.

In Science, we learnt about the amazing work of William Kamkwamba and how he used renewable energy to bring electricity into his village when he was only 14 years old.

In Music, we have learnt a new song called the 'Cowboy song' that is based on the pentatonic scale.

Maize delivered an inspirational quote to the class today, 'Don't cry, give it a try!'

This week in Maths, we have been working on tenths in both decimals and fraction.  Explain to your adult at home the sum of 6 tenths and 8 tenths.

We have started our new English CLPE book where we have discussed the characters of Elka and Daw.  We have inferred from the story so far that Elka is a mature and caring sister whilst Daw is younger and needs more help.

In Science, we are learning about electricity and the different types of renewable energy.

The arithmetic and reasoning quizzes that we completed this half-term have been given back to the children for your review.  There is no expectation to go through the quiz with your child but it would be beneficial to focus on any questions they find challenging. If there are any questions that your child are still unsure of please let your class teacher know.

We learnt the Romans left Britain to defend other parts of their empire and many of the buildings were left to decay after their departure.

We have read the emotional ending to the Boy at the Back of the Classroom and it was a fabulous read.  Ask us about why there is a picture of the Queen for this week's blog!

We heard the story of Boudica and then, in Art, we sketched our portrait of Boudica in readiness for painting using pointillism.

In Maths, we have been converting mixed numbers into improper numbers, and we have had a taster of equivalent fractions.

Geography has helped us to understand how immigrants feel when they arrive in another country, which further clarifies the feelings of the character, Ahmet, in our CLPE reading book.

We had fun being acoustic engineers this week whilst making our string telephones in Science.

We watched the Year 2 and 3 performance and learnt about the need to protect habitat for our precious bees.

Our CLPE English book gives us lots to think about regarding rumours and how they can affect people negatively.

For World Book day, we visited Usborne book stand and wrote down our wish list where our £1 gift voucher could be used to contribute to purchasing.  A big thanks to the PTA for delivering us some delicious hot chocolate today.

We have started our new CLPE reading book and the children have shown their amazing inference skills by deciphering why Ahmet is so shy.

In Maths, we have started fractions, and we now know what it means if the numerator and the denominator are the same.

In PE, we are using our knowledge from our history unit on the Celts to produce a dance around their conflict with the Romans.

In Geography, we have learnt about inequality and how it can impact people.

Our week has been dominated by our amazing Roman Day.  Thank you to all parents and carers for the fabulous costumes.  The children visited a Roman town and experienced the amphitheatre, the baths, the aqueducts, training in a Roman army and eventually at the market we tasted olives, balsamic vinegar, grapes and flat bread.  A special thanks to Florence and her mum for supplying us with an bread made using an authenic recipe.  It was a delicious treat!

Reading - 20 minutes a day to yourself, to someone else, to your pet.

This week, we walked down to the Marina and looked at the river nearby.  We show many features and show lots of physical and human features on our walk.

In DT, we have made pulleys to help as understand how the Romans were able to build their powerful empire.

Roman Day is on Wednesday 7th. It will be a fun day to explore the lifestyle of the Romans.  It would be great if you could help the children dress in Romanesqe clothing. Please do not buy anything new, a T-shirt with a scarf will be super.

Our work on the water cycle this week involved creating our own water cycle and concluded with a practical session with Anglian Water where we made our own sewage.

We have experienced the fighting skills of the Roman Army as opposed to that of the barbarians and how it was not a fair fight.

This week, we have had practical erosion experiment to see how rivers change the landscape.

In DT and History, we designed a pulley to help build a Roman town.

In Science, we explored how evaporation happens via heat and humidity.

Reading - Year 4s have done amazingly well and reached their target this term.  So at Christmas, relax and read a book.  This will help you get ready for your new target next term.

Year 4 have had a super busy week.  In Science, we started to learn about the food chain. 

In Art, we created our design in readiness for our printing next week. 

In Maths, we consolidate our knowledge in division and recognised that quotient and divisor are interchangeable.

From our English reading book, we are writing a diary entry as one of the main characters.

At home - TT Rockstars and Reading (AR targets)

We have practised our performance with Year 2.

In English, we are using our vocabulary on emotions to describe how the main protagonists might be feeling.

In Maths, we are learning how to use our division calculation to solve word problems.

We visited Elfridges and had fun choosing our presents.

TT- With the new school mathematician mammoth, things are getting exciting on a Friday, lets increase our speed in year 4 and get practising. Please remember in year four part of our homework is to do TT rockstars 3 times a week at a minimum. 

Talk homework: Thinking back to our practical model of the digestive system, can you name all seven parts of the digestive system we learnt about and what each part does. 

Reading: Please take the time to participate in reading to an adult for a recommended 5 minutes a day.  

We have had fun in Science, watching a piece of weetabix going through the digestive system.

In Maths, we have started to learn about short division.

Talk homework - Explain to your adults / family what we have been doing in Maths - how we find the quotient to division questions that involve a large dividend, e.g. 54 divided by 3.

We also handed back some assessment papers. The children have circled a question that they have been taught, and it would be great if you could spend some time going over it together. There are some elements of the paper that we have not taught and will be teaching soon. 

In Year 4, we have been debating if our main protagonist, Chaya, is right to steal in order to help others.

We had fun in Geography, where we drew on satsumas to show the lines of latitude and longitude. We also discussed the location of the Equator and the Prime Meridian.

In Science, we have been observing eggs that represented our teeth in different liquids over the past few days. We took them out of the liquid to find out how they had changed. Tell your adult / family what happened to each one!

TT Rockstars - the tournament is still on.

We have delving into our English book - The girl who stole an elephant - and we are about to find out what will happen next to our feisty protagonist.

In Maths, we are solving problems using our 3 times tables.  Ask us how to work out 23 x 3.

We have been practising our play.  Please help us to practise The Recycling Song - the verses in order are:

We have had some fantastic matches in netball where we were able to use all the skills we have learnt, foot work, 3 second rule and different types of throwing.

In Maths, we have been working on solving problems using subtractions with more than one exchange.

In English, we wrote a piece of writing filled with fronted adverbial, expanded noun phrases and exciting vocabulary about the video we watched on Literacy Shed - Hunted.

Today, we evaluated our DT project, which was the interactive active factsheet.

On Friday, we enjoyed our first non-uniform day with all contributions going to the painting of our Mini-G (giraffe calf) project.

In Maths, we have been learning about number lines and how to order numbers up to 10,000 within them.

In English, we have completed a great fact file about giraffes.

We are combining the skills we have learnt in netball to begin playing games on the court and on the field.

Year 4 have been busy doing auditions for our performance.  We are hoping to have the script ready for next week. 

In PE, we have been outside playing rugby and netball where the children have been learning about teamwork.

We have been developing our English skills by using inverted commas and modal verbs in our work.

In Maths, we are looking ten thousands and how to add and subtract 1, 10, 100 and 1000 to these.
