Week commencing 25th November

In Maths this week we have used our knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes in repeating patterns. We looked at shapes rotating and changing size and colour. We enjoyed making our own repeating patterns around the room and looked around school for when we could find them.

In English this week we designed a product for Hobgoblin Supplies and made our own advert to go in a witch’s catalogue.

In Global Learning our Goal is Industry, innovation and infrastructure. This week we learnt about the postal service and linked it to our English book The Jolly Postman. We learnt the journey of a letter.

In RE we designed our own part of a Christmas wreath.

Our phonics sounds for this week were:

aw – as in ‘saw you yawn’

wh – as in ‘www Whiffy Wilson’

ph – as in ‘Phonic Fairy’s alphabet’

ie – as in ‘tighten my tie’

This week we especially enjoyed looking through catalogues and making our own adverts.

Week commencing 18th November

In Maths this week we started looking at 3D shapes. We have been naming 3D shapes and recapping 2D shapes. We have looked at pictures and around the room to find as many shapes as we could.

In English we started our new book The Jolly Postman. We looked at story maps and drew our story map of travelling to school. We also wrote a letter to goldilocks and to Hobgoblin supplies to order something imagining we were the wicked witch. 

In Global Learning our Goal is Industry, innovation and infrastructure. We took a walk around Buckden and tried to spot different parts of the community such as post office, shops and church. We were all really interested in the old post box from teh time of King George.  Do you know where it is?

In RE we have started looking at the Nativity story. 

In Science we looked at some different uses for different materials, we decided whether something would be suitable to be used in a certain way.

Our phonics sounds for this week were:

oy – as in ‘joy of the toy’

ir – as in ‘girl with a curl’

ew – as in ‘stew and a brew’

ue – as in ‘I feel blue’

This week we especially enjoyed our walk around Buckden, and wlaking whre Kings and Queens have at Buckden Towers.

Week commencing 11th November

In Maths this week we have been solving subtraction picture and word problems. We also had a go at making some of our own. We then looked at finding the difference using subtraction and also how many left over.

In English this week we read a poem about fire and thought about bonfire night. We thought about describing fire and how it made us feel. We also had a go at sorting out jumbled sentences and using the correct punctuation.

In Global Learning our Goal is Industry, innovation and infrastructure. This week we started to make our vehicles.

In Science we had a go at sorting lots of different objects based on their materials.

Our phonics sounds for this week were:

ay – as in ‘ay, ay play all day’

ou – as in ‘Keep Out! Bears About!’

i-e – as in ‘Yikes, ride my bike’

ea – as in ‘eat your peas’

This week we especially enjoyed tricky maths problems, and trying to explain how we could find a solution

Week Commencing 4th November 2019

In Maths this week we looked at subtracting by counting back on a number line, we know which number to start from and that the numbers get smaller.

In English this week we continued reading and writing our own poems, we then performed them to the rest of the class.

In Global Learning our Goal is Industry, innovation and infrastructure. We started to design our own vehicles.

In Science we sorted different materials and had a go at describing them.

Our phonics sounds for this week were:

aw – as in ‘yawn’

wh – as in ‘whisper’

ph – as in ‘dolphin’

ie – as in ‘tie’

This week we especially enjoyed thinking about how we could make our own vehicle, including wheels and an axle, our teachers were impressed with our designs.

Week commencing 28th October 2019

Welcome back!

Everyone eas very keen in Maths this week where we have been subtracting numbers. We started by subtracting using objects and then moved onto putting what we’d done into a number sentence such as 10-3=7. This week we looking at tens frames to support us in our learning.

In English we have been looking at our new book Out and About, a book of poems. We listened to a poem and drew what we could hear in our minds. We then had a go at writing our own poem about mud, sand or water based on our experiences of these.

In Global Learning our Goal is Industry, innovation and infrastructure. We sorted vehicles based on having wheels or no wheels.

In Science we have started looking at materials, this week we grouped different materials.

This week we especially enjoyed playing in sand, water and mud outside to help with our poems.

Our phonics sounds for this week were:

air – as in ‘air, air fair hair’

ure – as in ‘ure, ure, cure with manure’

er – as in ‘er, er what’s for dinner?’

Week Commencing 14th October

During Maths this week we have been finding and making number bonds to 10. We know these are friendly numbers that match together like 7 and 3 8 and 2. 

In English we looked at the correct structure of a sentence and learnt that sentences need a capital letter, full stop and to make sense. 

In RE we were thinking about what presents we would take to a special baby, like the baby Jesus. This week we especially enjoyed our RE art.

In PSHE we made friendship soup, with positive words and actions.

Our phonics sounds for this week were:

ur – as in ‘ur,ur churn the curd’

ow – as in ‘ow ow Miaow said the Cow’

oi – as in ‘Oi! Get off our train’

ear – as in ‘ear, ear oh dear, never fear’

Year 1

Week commencing 7th October 2019

In Maths this week we have continued with adding numbers. We have done 2 digit add 1 digit, 1 digit add 1 digit. We even had a go when the equals sign was in a different place!

In English this week we had a go at some independent writing we retold the story of Beegu so far. We also have been making our own Earth out of paper mache and then we labelled some of the things you would find on Earth. This was very fun but messy!

During Science, we investigated whether people with big feet need big gloves.  We compared and then measured our feet, to see whether this was true.

In Global Learning our Goal is Quality education. We visited St Mary’s church and discovered where the old school was. We found out similarities between school then and now.

This week we especially enjoyed doing paper mache.

oo (long oo digraph)  – as in ‘oo oo zoom to the moon’

Week Commencing 30th September

In Maths this week we have been doing lots of adding using number lines, We also had a go at some tricky missing number problems. 

In English we wrote letters to Beegu as she travelled back to space. We also looked at speech between Beegu and her family and imagined what they would say to each other.

In Global Learning our Goal is Quality Education. We looked at the difference between the past and the present. We compared a picture of Buckden then and now. 

In Science we sorted foods into different groups using our senses.

This week we especially enjoyed writing to Beegu.

Our phonics sounds for this week were:

ee – as in ‘ee ee what shall we see?’

qu – as in ‘qu qu quiet for the Queen’

igh – as in ‘igh, igh my pants are tight’

oa – as in ‘oa, oa go for a goal’

Week commencing 23rd September 2019

In Maths this week we have been learning our numbers 1-10 we practiced counting correctly forwards and backwards and finding 1 more and 1 less.

In English this week we looked at instructional language and ordered a set of instructions to play a game. We also looked at a page in Beegu and role played being some of the characters and writing their thoughts and feelings.

In Global Learning our Goal is Quality education. We looked at the things you would find in a school.

In RE we learnt about harvest festival and produced some art based on this.

We went outside during Science, and used our sense to see what we could discover around us, it was very useful that someone was having a bonfire.

This week we especially enjoyed using part part whole models in maths.

sh – as in ‘sh, shh we have a plan’

th – as in ‘th, th think, this way that way’

ng – as in ‘NG, NG Ching’s ring’

Week Commencing: 16th September 2019

In Maths this week we have been comparing groups of objects using words such as greater than, less than and equal to. We also looked at positional numbers and practised these by doing an obstacle course.

In English we have been reading the book Beegu, and have had a go at retelling the story so far.

In Global Learning our Goal is Quality education. We looked at where people go to have an education or be educated.

In Science we have learnt and labelled the different parts of the body. We enjoyed drawing round one of our friends and then trying to decode the labels to place on the body.  We wre quite good at this activity.

This week we especially enjoyed going on a senses hunt around school.

Our phonics sounds for this week were:

y – as in ‘y y Yeti’

z – as in ‘zig zag zzzz’

ch – as in ‘ch ch chick chick chicken’

In Maths this week we have been learning our numbers 1-10 we practiced counting correctly forwards and backwards and finding 1 more and 1 less.

In English this week we discovered a spaceship had crash landed on our school field! We came up with some ideas of where it had come from or what could be inside.

In Global Learning our Goal is Quality Education. We talked about what the word education means.

In Science we have learnt about our senses and what we use them for, we can now identify and use our senses.

This week we especially enjoyed seeing the spaceship crash landed.
