Reading
We have put your new shared reading book ‘What’s for Lunch?’ in your book bags today. Please take a little look over the weekend to familiarise yourself with the text ready for our first shared read on Monday.
Doodle Maths
Please try and spend 10 minutes, 3 times a week answering questions on Doodle Maths to ensure that you are in the Green Zone! If you cannot remember your child’s Doodle Login, please contact your child’s class teacher and we can reset it for you.
Handwriting
We have been working so hard on our letter formation in our handwriting sessions and the children's letters are continuing to improve. We have been focusing on making sure that we can distinguish between our tall and small letters, and are practising sitting our letters on the line. Any opportunities to practise those alphabet letters at home would be fantastic, we appreciate any time you can put in.
This Week
In English this week we have finished our story, Beegu! We have recapped the story, learned how to write in the first person using I, learned how to write in the past tense using the -ed ending for lots of our verbs, and we have been looking back at the basics of a sentence, including a capital letter, finger spaces between our words and a full stop at the end. We have also recapped all of our phonic sounds in our dictation lessons, where the children could recall the sounds we have learned and write them in words and sentences.
In Science we used our sense of taste. The children were very adventurous and tried a range of different tastes, sweet apples, salty crackers, sour lemon and bitter lettuce. The children were correct in their predictions and enjoyed tasting the different, yummy foods!
In DT this week the children designed, made and evaluated their classroom table prototypes. The children could cut their table top and legs, fold their legs to make a tab, glue their tabs to their table tops and we tested if their structure could stand up on its own. The children had a great time and created some fantastic designs that were freestanding!
In History this week, the children learned about Queen Victoria, understanding that the Victorian Era was named after a very important Monarch. We learned about the introduction of trains and railways, and learned that Victoria was just 18 when she began her reign over England and the British Empire!
We are incredibly proud of how the children have settled into their first half term of Year 1, they are developing their listening skills, working on their focus and independence, and we have had a lovely time getting to know each other.
Have a wonderful half term break, get plenty of rest, spend time with friends and family and we look forward to seeing you back, refreshed and ready to go on Monday 2nd November!
