Food Week.
Embrace all things yummy!
18th May 2020
Dear Kenny class,
Hello again everyone!
How are those journals going? Have a look back over how much you have been doing over the past few weeks.
Reminder, in your journal you write:
We can’t wait to see them.
The ideas below are to support you, pick and choose what suits you and feel free to add your own ideas. Your children are likely to have many more things they would like to learn around the topic of food.
Take care and stay safe
Hopefully I will see you all soon

This is a suggestion of how much learning to do over a day with a reception child. Aim for a maximum of 2 hours focused learning interspersed with play based learning and physical activity. Of course what is important is that you do what works best with your family. The work listed below is more than enough for 5 days of learning so choose the tasks that you would prefer to do.
am 30 min |
Sports/ physical activity- Joe Wicks as a suggestion, Disney Zumba |

Food
Idea 1
Sorting food from your cupboards. Gather items and decide how you can sort them. Shape, colour, type, texture and more. See if your grown up or brother/ sister can work out how you chose to sort them.
Idea 2
Estimating how many of each item there is in packets. Write down/ share your estimate for how many items you think there is for example biscuits in a packet. Then count them to see if your estimate was an accurate one or not.
Idea 3
Where has my food come from? Read packets to learn more about the country of origin. Try and find this on a map. Which food item has travelled the furthest? Can you find which foods have been produced more locally?
Idea 4
Get creative with your snack. Can you make a picture or a pattern with it?
Idea 5
Free access to children’s books at https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/cme/Free-Kids-Books-Kindle-UK-Fire/B00TWBYPVI
Online learning sites www.phonicsplay.co.uk, www.topmarks.co.uk www.phonicsbloom.co.uk, www.topmarks.co.uk, www.ictgames.co.uk www.readingeggs.co.uk (free subscription available) www.teachyourmonstertoread.com, https://monsterphonics.com/ https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/reading/reading-age-4-5-reception/ https://www.themathsfactor.com/
Idea 6
How is food produced? Does it grow? Is it from an animal like milk or meat? Is it made with ingredients mixed together like bread or baked beans? On your daily walk take a stroll to the school allotment on Silver Street to see what is being grown there.
Below are two BBC videos to support this.

Idea 7
Read/ share stories involving food. Examples are ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’, ‘Handa’s Surprise’, ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’, ‘Don’t Forget the Bacon’, ‘The Light House Keepers Lunch’. If you don’t have copies of these stories youtube have read aloud versions available.
Idea 8
Design and create your own story with food in it. Maybe you could use one of the stories above and change it a bit- the Hungry Caterpillar could eat through different foods for example. You can illustrate it, write or get your grown up to write down your ideas.
Idea 9
Follow a recipe. Explore any recipe books you may have at home or online. Choose something to make. Write a list of the ingredients you will need. A sandwich, a pasta dish, a biscuit? Help your grown up to weigh, measure and mix up your yummy choice. Talk about how you stay hygienic and safe whilst you do this.
Idea 10
Science- write a message on a banana by using a cocktail stick to write or draw by pushing firmly to dent the skin but not hard enough to break it. Wait patiently for the message or drawing to appear.
Idea 11
Learn some names of food in French. Here are some simple ones to get you started.
Water- l’eau
Bread- pain
Cheese- fromage
Apple- pomme
Banana- banane
Idea 12
To help your child secure their digit recognition, sequencing and place value of digits to 10 then to 20 these games are helpful and fun.
Use playing cards to play higher/lower.
Make bunting writing digits on each flag- can count backwards or in 2’s to add challenge.
Write digits on post its, hide them around your environment then ask your child to find and sequence them.
Play who has more? Have some digits to 20 written on small paper face down. Take one digit each. Who has the highest number? That person wins both cards. Repeat and see who won the most.
Idea 13
Play guess that food. Have a hidden food item that your child or you describe for the other to guess. Encourage descriptive vocabulary, eg. It is dimpled, squishy, waxy. Knowledge of the item, eg. It grows on trees in warm climates. How it tastes, eg. It is fresh, sharp and sweet. How it can be eaten/ prepared, eg. It can be made into juice which we have at breakfast time or peeled and broken into segments. Try to model using high level vocabulary and encourage your child to ask for clarification if they don’t know what you mean. Eg. What does climate mean? It means the weather and temperature. This communication and language game could then be used to write a riddle or poem about food.
Idea 14
Create a ‘still life’ of food for your child to do an observational drawing/ painting of inspired by Paul Cezanne.
Idea 15
Look at the packaging of food. Can you separate them into recyclable and non-recyclable? How do you know, what on the packaging tells you if you can recycle something?
Idea 16
Can you create a menu for a dinner or lunch that you are having?
