We have had a great first week in Year 5 and a successful Friday, with our non-uniform day generating a huge amount of supplies for the Christmas Hamper Raffle - Thank you!

In maths, we are learning about negative numbers and how a number below zero is a negative number, but a number above zero is a positive number. We have studied thermometers and now know that -5 > -6. Our new English book 'Street Child' is fascinating. So far, we have met the members of The Jarvis Family and have discovered what life was like for them. It is set in Victorian times and describes the hardships that the family have to endure. In science, we have revised the States of Matter and considered a selection of items to decide if they were solids, liquids or gases. This activity elucidated some deep thinking and discussion. We will be extending our learning in this subject to investigate reversible and irreversible changes. Our Global Goal this half-term is Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure. We have ensured we understand what these words mean and have familiarised ourselves with The Industrial Revolution and have started to appreciate the impact of steam on industry at that time.

We were very excited and honoured to have a live Zoom call with The Jubilee Academy in Kenya on the last day of last half-term. We were shown all around the school and our children in Year 5 were able to compare their education experience with that of a Kenyan child attending Jubilee Academy. We loved their school and felt privileged to be shown the classrooms, the toilet block and the playground. We met a Year 2 teacher called Edith, the headteacher and the lady that cooks their dinners.  After the call, we decided we would really love to do something to help their school as a thank you for showing us around. Edith told us that her school desperately needs textbooks. The children in year 5 have got some really creative ideas for things they would like to make to raise money. This will be our Global Neighbours Project this year and more details will follow.

    Enjoy your weekend
